Program Timeline:

  • Nominations open January 12, 2024

  • Nominations close February 26, 2024

  • Finalists (to be called Luminaries) submitted to State Selection Committee March 21, 2024

  • State Selection Committee meets April 10, 2024 (tentative)

  • Statewide Event, May 18, 2024 

Selection Process:

  • Participating regional groups will receive nominations from their areas and will submit their finalists (Luminaires) to the State Selection Committee. Regional groups may submit nominations in any or all of the categories.

    • Denver Regional Nightingale Association may submit two finalists per category. 

    • Centennial AHEC, Pikes Peak Nightingale Association, San Luis Valley AHEC, Southeastern Colorado AHEC, Southwestern Colorado AHEC, and Western AHEC may submit one finalist per category.

  • Recipients will be selected by a State Selection Committee composed of two representatives from DRNA, one representative from each of the other regions/Committees, two representatives from the CNF Board, and two past Nightingale Recipients. 

  • One Recipient will be selected from each category.

Award Categories:

Excellence in Clinical Practice

This award is given to a registered professional nurse, licensed practical nurse, advanced practice registered nurse. Nurses nominated for this award are recognized for providing an outstanding quality of patient care as demonstrated by superior nursing clinical skills, advocacy, or extraordinary caring and compassion. Exceptional communication skills enhance their contribution to the health needs of their patients while advancing the profession while advancing the profession through

Acute Care Clinical Practice


Excellence in Nursing Administration

Nurse administrators nominated for this award are recognized for excellence in cultivating and sustaining supportive environments for the practice of nursing in challenging and diverse arenas. The nominees for this award support a model of professional practice in their organization through their transformational leadership, advocacy, innovation, mentoring and knowledge of the health care needs of their communities.

Nursing Education-Academia: Exceptional Achievements in Nursing

The nominee is an educator who is an inspiration to students and role model who cultivates an inclusive and supportive learning environment. Through innovative and evidence-based teaching practices, instills both the art and science of professional nursing practice.

Long Term Care, Rehabilitation

Nurse Led Teams: Exceptional Achievements in Nursing

Build visionary and effective teams of leaders (at least two additional team members) who identify and meet patient and /or patient family needs by going above and beyond the traditional role of Nursing through innovation, advocacy, and/or leadership. Nursing Education - Nursing Professional Development: Exceptional Achievements in Nursing

The nominee promotes evidence-based practices within a clinical setting. An individual who strives to promote clinical practice excellence through professional development. The nominee contributes to quality patient care through professional mentorship.

Health Care Policy

Nominees for this award demonstrate noteworthy involvement or leadership in healthcare policy through involvement in local, regional, state and national initiatives or legislation to affect policy to improve healthcare systems and outcomes or to advocate for patients, families, and communities.

Quality Improvement

Nominees for this award employ quality improvements and leadership to promote optimal outcomes. The nominee demonstrates noteworthy involvement or influence in healthcare policy and advocacy; contribute to interdisciplinary collaboration and improve patient and/or population health.

Research and Quality Improvement and Healthcare Policy

Nursing Research

Research generates new knowledge for evidence-based nursing practice. Nominees for this award are committed to excellence in nursing practice through research. Nurse researchers may receive grants, conduct research, and disseminate findings through presentations and publications to contribute to evidence-based nursing practice, patient care, education, and science in the practice and academic settings. Nominee is a visionary nurse with a passion to advance nursing through research.


Excellence in Nursing Eminence Award

This award is presented to a professional nurse who has exemplified excellence in nursing over a lifetime of service (20 years or more in the nursing profession) contributing to the advancement of the profession. This nurse is dedicated to quality, compassionate care and promotes a positive image of nursing. They have demonstrated exceptional leadership, fostered involvement in the nursing profession, and formed engaging partnerships.

Nursing Administration - Executive/CNO: Exceptional Achievements in Nursing

The emphasis is on an upper level of nursing leadership and management. An individual who demonstrates visionary leadership, advocates for and implements innovations, and promotes effective financial stewardship of operational human resources.

Clinical Advanced Practice, RN

Excellence in Nursing Education

The dissemination of knowledge holds the promise for the future. Nurse educators nominated for this award demonstrate the ability to inspire nursing students and practicing nurses. They creatively encourage students and colleagues to pursue knowledge and skills needed to practice nursing with clinical excellence, caring, and compassion.


Nursing Administration - Leader/Manager: Exceptional Achievements in Nursing

The emphasis is on a clinical practice leader/manager. An individual who influences the quality of patient care with a focus on infrastructure support, support of their teams, and positive clinical outcomes. An emerging/experienced nurse supports creative strategies and management in healthcare to promote quality health care delivery.
